For many people, it's hard to tell the difference between one tuxedo and another with a simple glance. Yet two men wearing similar tuxedos can look very different, even if there seems to be little difference in their body type. What is the key to looking your very best?
Perhaps James Bond said it best when he first donned the classic tuxedo in Casino Royale. "It's tailored," was his only comment, but it was a very telling one. Tailoring and fit are what allow a tux or a mens suit to make the wearer stand out in a crowd and look stylish. While plenty of men would claim not to care one whit about fashion, it's unlikely that they would turn down the opportunity to look as sharp and "smashing" as Mr. Bond does.
First of all, it's important to make sure that the men's suit or tux you're planning to wear fits properly. The number one rule is that the jacket needs to be able to close, even if you're planning to wear it open. If it won't close, it's too small! Likewise, a suit that is too big will make you look sloppy. The shoulders of your jacket should end where your natural shoulders end, not hang over. The sleeves shouldn't cover most of your hands and the jacket shouldn't hang too far below your hipbone. The pants shouldn't be baggy.
Remember that discount suits aren't that great a deal if they aren't well tailored or don't fit right. That doesn't mean that you need to buy a pricier suit, just that you need to be conscious of the fit. When in doubt, go larger, particularly if you are in between sizes. It's easier to tailor down than it is to tailor up. Always befriend your local tailor!
