When it comes to men's suits, being 6’5” and 210 pounds can be an obstacle. While your body type is ideal for the NBA, suit shopping may leave you frustrated. Before you give up on the idea of owning a well-fit suit, make sure you follow these style hints from GQ magazine.
In the hunt for a suit that is big and long enough, tall men are often left with boxy suits. Instead of appearing nice and tall, they end up looking small and frail. To avoid this look, don’t buy men’s suits with oversize, padded shoulders. In addition, stay away from extra-slim neckties. Instead, purchase ties with a little more width so they won’t appear to elongate your torso. If your tie doesn’t have enough length to reach the back loop, ask your tailor to move up the loop.
To complement your narrow body shape, stick to lighter suit colors. Lighter hues add width to a narrow frame. Another important trick is to purchase suits with high-cut lapels. According to GQ magazine, a two-button suit looks great on a tall man, as long as the suit has relatively high-cut lapels. To avoid looking lanky, keep the amount of cuff you show to a minimum. Likewise, so that your legs don’t look extra long, ask for a decent amount of break in your trousers. When it comes to shoes, ignore the pointy dress shoes which will make your feet appear longer than they are. Instead, opt for a rounder toe.
Accessories can also play an important part in playing down your height. When you’re tall, go for accessories that cut across your body such as belts, quarter-folded pocket squares and horizontally striped ties.
