Menswear Now Setting Fashion Trends for Women
For many people, awards shows such as the Oscars or the Grammy Awards are the benchmarks for the latest in men’s fashions. If George Clooney decides to wear a wool suit to a major function, chances are that men all around the world will be scrambling to match his winning style.
However, now it appears that it’s not just men who are wearing tuxedos. Some of the hottest trends in women’s fashion are looks inspired by men’s suits. According to a recent story on WCBS-TV in New York, traditional menswear styling is playing a major role in how top designers of women’s clothing are approaching their looks. For example, jackets from tuxedos are now a staple of many women’s wardrobes, along men’s suits with tight fits.
Many designers are looking to contrast very feminine elements of a woman’s wardrobe with more traditionally masculine elements to create a unique juxtaposition. Of course, elements need to be adapted for a woman’s physique; for example, a tuxedo jacket needs to be tailored in order to make a woman stop looking like a penguin.
This is not a new trend in women’s fashion – think back to the early 1970s and the trends that came about thanks to fashion icons such as Faye Dunaway and Diane Keaton experimenting with men’s clothing. But while there is also always room for innovation in men’s clothing, don’t expect the reserve to come true any time soon – men shouldn’t start stocking up on dresses to get ahead of the coming fashion trends.
