History of Neckties HEADING_TITLE

As one of the key elements of a formal or business outfit, neckties are something of a staple in most men's closets. Whether you choose to go with a classic color and pattern, or you want something a little more unusual that will help you stand out in a crowd, there's no denying that a necktie is an accessory that will let you express yourself.

What are the origins of this item of neckwear most commonly pairs with business suits and dress shirts? The necktie is actually descended from another accessory: the cravat. Cravats became fashionable all the way back in the early 1600s during the Thirty Years War, inspired by the traditional neckerchiefs worn by Croatian mercenaries. Different variations of neckwear came in and out of fashion over the next few centuries, with the modern narrow necktie making its first appearance during the Industrial Revolution. At that time, there was a need for neckwear that would pair well with a dress suit and wear comfortably and securely the entire workday. These benefits help explain why the necktie is still extremely popular 150 years later.

Today, neckties can be found in every color of the rainbow, in a wide range of patterns, and in various types of fabrics. There are differences in popular styles to be found depending on what part of the world you live in. For instance, pink ties are exceptionally popular in Japan, where there is much less of a stigma against men wearing the color pink.

Whether you're looking to give new life to an old suit separate or give your neutral wardrobe a lively splash of color, picking out a new necktie or two is a great way to make a simple but notable change. With rich solids and vibrant patterns, there's something for everyone.
