The tie is commonly used by many in the corporate race and is also seen at more formal occasions as well. They are typically used for occasions such as weddings, meetings and in other formal events. Some careers also necessitate them as a daily part of the dress code. There are many ways to knot the cravat. These include methods that vary based on the type of shirt that is being worn. The cravat or ascot as it is also known has four typical ways to be knotted.

The first common tie knot is identified as the wide and triangular. This is better for the widespread shirt collars. These knots start with the wide end of the cravat and this end is placed on your right with a length that is about a foot below the narrow side. The wide end is crossed over the narrow end and brought through the loop. The wide end is then brought down around the narrow end and up to the right. This is then put through the loop and around the narrow. It is turned and passed up though the loop and completed by the slipping down through the knot in front.

The other common option for a tie knot is the half-windsor. This is suitable for a standard shirt collar and is easy to accomplish. The start is with the wide end of the ascot on the right and a foot below the narrow. Cross the wide end over the narrow end and turn it back underneath. Bring up this side and turn it through the loop. Pass the wide end around the front and from left to right. Then through the loop and down through the knot at the front and tighten. These are the two most popular knots.
